Aquariums have been studied as a calming influence for decades, and the results are consistent enough that many dental surgeries and waiting rooms keep one. Slow, unpredictable movement seems to be the active ingredient: it holds a little attention without demanding any.
Why a Simulated One Still Works
The effect does not depend on the fish being real, which is convenient because a real tank needs feeding, filtering and cleaning. A drifting scene on a spare monitor gives you most of the ambience for none of the maintenance.
Where It Works Best
A second screen, a wall display in a waiting area, a shared office, or a classroom during quiet work. It gives the room something to rest on that is not a phone.
Where It Does Not
Directly in front of you while you are trying to concentrate on text. Movement in the periphery is calming; movement in the centre of your field of view is a distraction. Put it to one side.

How This Scene Is Built
The scene is drawn with gradients and CSS animation rather than a video file, which matters more than it sounds. There is nothing to buffer on a slow connection, the page works offline once loaded, and the whole thing costs a few kilobytes instead of several megabytes.
If the movement is more than you want, the pause button freezes everything and leaves the colours in place. The page also stops the animation automatically if your operating system is set to reduce motion, which some people need for vestibular reasons.

Aquarium Background Questions
Does the aquarium use a video file?
No. Every fish, bubble and frond is drawn with CSS. The page weighs a few kilobytes rather than the several megabytes a looping video would need, it starts instantly, and it keeps working with no connection.
Can I turn off the movement?
Press pause motion and everything freezes while the colours stay. If your device is set to reduce motion, the scene starts paused without being asked.
Will it slow my computer down?
It is light, and the number of bubbles and fish drops automatically on small screens. If you are running something demanding at the same time, pausing the motion removes almost all of the cost.
Is there sound?
No. The page is silent by design, since most people run an ambient background alongside their own music or in a room where sudden audio would be unwelcome.
Can I use it as a screensaver?
Put the browser in full screen and disable the system screensaver. It is not a true screensaver, so on an OLED panel do not leave a static clock in one position for many hours.
