Hours Timer

For the long blocks: a work session, a slow roast, a shift, a fast, an overnight process. Pick a whole number of hours or type an exact duration, and the page tells you what time it will finish.

Ready

Before starting anything over an hour, stop the device sleeping. A sleeping computer suspends the tab and the alarm will not fire on time.

What an Hours Timer Is Actually For

Short timers are about not forgetting. Long timers are about not checking — the whole point is to stop looking at the clock and let it tell you.

LengthUseWorth knowing
1 hourA focus block, a lesson, a slow simmerLong enough to get past the warm-up on demanding work
90 minutesDeep work, an exam, one sleep cycleRoughly the natural cycle of alertness, so breaks land where fatigue does
2–3 hoursA roast, a study session, a long drive legSet an intermediate reminder too; three hours without a break costs more than it gains
4 hoursHalf a shift, dough proving, a slow cookNote the finishing time on paper as well, in case the tab closes
8 hoursA full working day, a sleep window, a fastRequires the device to stay awake for the whole period
12–24 hoursFermentation, curing, an intermittent fastA phone or kitchen timer is more dependable at this length

Making it reliable

Four Things That Break Long Timers

Step 1

The Device Sleeps

By far the most common failure. A laptop that suspends after fifteen idle minutes will suspend the tab with it. Change the power settings, or keep something else on screen that counts as activity.

Step 2

The Tab Gets Closed

There is no recovery. Write the finishing time down — it is shown under the countdown for exactly this reason — so a lost tab costs you the alarm but not the information.

Step 3

The Volume Is Down

Test the alarm sound once before you walk away. It takes two seconds and is the difference between a timer that works and one that quietly finishes in an empty room.

Step by step

How to Use the Hours Timer

Set countdown timers in hours for study, work sessions, cooking, presentations, sleep, workouts, and productivity.

Enter the number of hours, minutes, and seconds you want to count down from, then press Start. The timer will count down until it reaches zero and notify you that time is complete. The finishing time is shown underneath so you know exactly when the deadline falls, even if the tab is later closed.

Pick a whole number of hours from the preset buttons for the common cases, or type an exact figure for anything in between. One click on a preset sets the timer immediately.

Hours Timer Questions

Sleep, closed tabs, phones and how long is too long for a browser.

Can I really leave a timer running for eight hours?

On a desktop or laptop that stays awake, yes. The countdown is anchored to an end timestamp, so throttling does not cost you time. What does break a long timer is the machine going to sleep, which suspends everything. Before starting anything measured in hours, disable sleep or keep the device plugged in and set to stay awake.

What happens if I close the tab?

The countdown ends with it. Nothing is stored on a server, so there is no way to resume. For long stretches, the safe approach is to note the finishing time shown on screen, so that even if the tab is lost you know when the deadline actually falls.

Does the timer survive the screen locking?

On a computer, locking the screen usually keeps the tab alive and the alarm will sound when the machine is unlocked or, on many systems, immediately through the speakers. On a phone, locking almost always suspends the page. Long timers on a phone are better handled by the built-in clock app.

How do I set 90 minutes rather than a whole hour?

Type it: 1 in the hours box, 30 in minutes. The presets are shortcuts for round hours, but the input boxes accept any combination up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.

Is an hour timer useful for work, or is that just a Pomodoro thing?

Both approaches have a following. Pomodoro's 25 minutes suits work that is easy to interrupt and hard to start. Longer single blocks of 60 to 90 minutes suit work with a slow warm-up — writing, coding, analysis — where being interrupted at 25 minutes costs more than the break is worth. Try both and keep the one that leaves you with more finished work.

Will it wake me up if I use it as a nap timer?

It will make a sound, but treat it as a backup rather than the primary alarm. Browser tabs are the least reliable place to put anything you genuinely must not sleep through. Set your phone alarm too.
