Where Halloween comes from
An Old Festival with a Long Route
Samhain
The origin usually cited is Samhain, the Gaelic festival marking the end of harvest and the start of winter, when the boundary between this world and the other was held to be thin. Fires were lit and disguises worn, which is a recognisable ancestor of what happens now.
All Hallows' Eve
The Christian calendar placed All Saints' Day on 1 November, making 31 October All Hallows' Eve. The name contracted to Halloween, and the older customs attached themselves to the new date rather than disappearing.
Guising and Trick-Or-Treating
Going door to door in costume for food is recorded in Scotland and Ireland for centuries, where children performed a song or a joke to earn it. Irish and Scottish emigration carried the practice to North America, where it became the modern form.
Pumpkins Came Later
The original carved lanterns were turnips, which are smaller and considerably harder work. Pumpkins were abundant in North America and far easier to hollow out, so the tradition changed vegetable and never changed back.

How This Scene Is Built
The scene is entirely CSS: the bats are made from borders, the pumpkin from a radial gradient with two triangular cut-outs, and the fog from a drifting translucent band. Nothing is loaded from anywhere.
The countdown targets midnight at the start of 31 October in your time zone, and rolls over to next year once the day has passed. For a party starting at a specific hour, the custom countdown takes a date and a time and produces a link you can send out with the invitation.

Is it suitable for children?
It is a moon, some cartoon bats and a friendly pumpkin. There is nothing frightening in it and no sound.
Why were the first lanterns turnips?
Because that is what grew in Ireland and Scotland. Pumpkins are a New World crop, and when the tradition crossed the Atlantic it found a vegetable that was larger, softer and vastly easier to carve.
Can I use this on a screen at a party?
That is a good use for it. Full screen on a television or projector gives the room an ambient backdrop, and the countdown is a talking point in the run-up.
Does the fog slow anything down?
No, it is a single drifting gradient. The bats are the only elements with their own animations, and there are at most six.
