Where the Effect Came From

A 1999 Title Sequence

The falling-code effect was designed for The Matrix by Simon Whiteley, who has said the glyphs were based on characters from his wife's Japanese cookbook, scanned and then mirrored. It has been imitated ever since, which is why it now reads as shorthand for computing in general.

Why Green on Black

Early computer terminals used monochrome phosphor screens, and the P1 phosphor glowed green. It was cheap, it was easy on the eyes at low brightness, and a generation of programmers spent their working lives looking at it. The association stuck long after colour screens arrived.

Good for a Dark Room

Like the starfield, this is mostly black, so it throws very little light. On an OLED panel most of the screen is genuinely off.

Not Actually Code

The characters are katakana and digits picked at random. They do not spell anything, and nobody is being hacked. If someone tells you a screen of falling green glyphs means an intrusion is in progress, they are quoting a film.

How This Scene Is Built

Up to forty-eight columns of characters fall at independent speeds with staggered delays, each column carrying eight to twenty-six glyphs drawn at random from katakana and digits. A vignette darkens the edges so the clock stays readable.

Everything is text and CSS animation, so it costs a fraction of what a video loop would and stays crisp at any size, including on a projector.
