People Have Always Told Time by It

Before mechanical clocks, the sky was the clock. The rotation of the stars around the pole gave the hour, their seasonal position gave the month, and navigators used both to find their way across oceans with nothing else to go on.

Dark Is Comfortable at Night

A screen showing mostly black emits very little light, which makes this the gentlest of the scenes to leave running in a dark room. On an OLED panel the black pixels are genuinely off, so it also costs the least power.

The Meteors Are on a Timer

A handful of shooting stars cross at irregular intervals of seven to sixteen seconds. They are rare enough to be a small event when one happens, rather than constant motion you stop noticing.

What It Will Not Do

This is not an accurate sky. The stars are scattered at random rather than placed by catalogue, so you will not find Orion in it. For real constellations you want a planetarium application, not a clock background.

How This Scene Is Built

Around a hundred and seventy stars twinkle on independent cycles, with a faint diagonal band standing in for the Milky Way. Every one is a CSS circle, so the whole scene costs a few kilobytes and stays sharp on a projector.

It pairs well with the night light on a phone beside you set to a dim amber, which gives you enough light to see by without spoiling the dark screen.

Are the stars in real positions?

No. They are scattered randomly and twinkle on independent cycles, which looks convincing but is not a star chart. If you want the real sky for tonight, a planetarium app will place every constellation correctly for your latitude.

Why do stars appear to twinkle?

In reality, because their light passes through pockets of air at different temperatures and gets bent slightly on the way down. Planets twinkle far less, because they are disks rather than points and the wobbles average out. Here it is a CSS animation, but the effect is the same one your eye expects.

Is this the best scene for a dark room?

Almost certainly. It is mostly black, so it throws very little light, and on an OLED screen the dark pixels draw no power at all.

How often do the meteors appear?

Each one runs on its own cycle of roughly seven to sixteen seconds, with staggered delays, so they arrive irregularly rather than on a beat.

Can I stop the twinkling?

Press pause motion. The stars stay where they are and simply hold still.
